Qin Style – Black Pottery
Black Pottery has a history over 2000 years old and was originally commissioned by the palace for exclusive use of the emperor.
Today replicas of Qin period Black Pottery, together with newer designs, are lovingly produced to special order by a group of master potters in the north of China. Made from terra cotta clay, the care and attention begins with the collection and selection of the clay to be used. When ready the clay is kneaded until pliable and sent to spinners and moulders where vases and bowls are spun and figures are lovingly hand formed by pottery masters.
The pieces are put through three stages of firing beginning with a first low temperature firing where carbon is infused to achieve the black colour through to a final high temperature firing.
